6,000 Complaints Lodged Against Late-Term Abortionist LeRoy Carhart: "A formal complaint was filed on February 19th by Operation Rescue, seeking the revocation of Carhart’s license in the death of Morbelli, who sought a late-term abortion at Carhart’s clinic in Germantown, Maryland. Morbelli was 33 weeks into her pregnancy with her pre-born daughter, Madison, who was diagnosed with a seizure disorder.
Following her abortion on February 6th, Carhart left Maryland and could not be reached by Morbelli’s family when her condition deteriorated later that evening. The next day, Morbelli was taken to Shady Grove Hospital where she eventually died from massive internal bleeding. "

Resolution

Expressing the sense of the Senate that Congress and the States should investigate and correct abusive, unsanitary, and illegal abortion practices.

Whereas the Declaration of Independence sets forth the principle that all people are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;

Whereas the dedication of the people of the United States to this principle, though at times tragically marred by institutions such as slavery and practices such as segregation and the denial of the right to vote, has summoned the people of the United States time and again to fight for human dignity and the common good;

Whereas the people of the United States believe that every human life is precious from its very beginning, and that every individual, regardless of age, health, or condition of dependency, deserves the respect and protection of society;

Whereas the people of the United States believe that early and consistent prenatal care for all mothers, with due regard both for the well-being of expectant mothers and forthe children they carry, is a primary goal of any sound health care policy in the United States; Whereas no woman should ever be abandoned, by policy or practice, to the depredations of an unlicensed, unregulated, or uninspected clinic operating outside of the law with no regard for the mothers or children ostensibly under its care;

Whereas the Report of the Grand Jury in the Court of Common Pleas of the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania,certified on January 14, 2011, contains the results of athorough investigation of the policies and practices of Dr.Kermit Gosnell and the Women's Medical Society of Philadelphia, which found multiple violations of law andpublic policy relating to abortion clinics, and recommended to the Pennsylvania Department of Health that these abortion clinics be explicitly regulated as ambulatory surgical facilities, so that they are inspected an-nually and held to the same standards as all other out-patient procedure centers;

Whereas the Report of the Grand Jury documented a pattern, over a period of 2 decades, at the Women's Medical Society of Philadelphia of untrained and uncertified personnel performing abortions, non-medical personnel administering medications, grossly unsanitary and dangerous conditions, violations of law regarding storage of human remains, and, above all, instances of willful murder of infants born alive by severing their spinal cords;

Whereas the violations of law and human dignity documentedat the Women's Medical Society of Philadelphia involved women referred to the facility by abortion facilities in anumber of surrounding States, including Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Delaware;

Whereas abortion clinics in a number of States, particularly Michigan and Maryland, and including 2 clinics at which Dr. Kermit Gosnell performed or initiated abortions and 2 Planned Parenthood facilities in Delaware, have been closed temporarily or permanently due to unsanitary conditions, and the Planned Parenthood facilities in Delaware have been described by former employees as resembling a meat market;

Whereas the imposition of criminal and civil penalties on individuals and corporations involved in the deplorablepractices described in this preamble is appropriate, but isnot the only necessary response to such practices; Whereas it is essential that the Federal Government and State and local governments take action to prevent dan-gerous conditions at abortion clinics;

Whereas government accountability means that officials whose duty it is to protect the safety and well-being of mothers accessing health care clinics must have their actions made public and their failures redressed;

Whereas the extent of, and purported justification for, legal and illegal abortions in the United States performed late in the second trimester of pregnancy and into andthroughout the third trimester of pregnancy are not routinely reported by all States or by the Centers for Disease Control, and are therefore unknown;

Whereas women and children in the United States deserve better than the 56,145,920 abortions that have been performed in the United States since the Supreme Courtrulings in Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113, and Doe v. Bolton,410 U.S. 179, in 1973; and Whereas there is substantial medical evidence that an unborn child is capable of experiencing pain at 20 weeks after fertilization, or earlier: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That it is the sense of the Senate that-—

(1) Congress and States should gather information about and correct-—

• (A) abusive, unsanitary, and illegal abortion practices; and
• (B) the interstate referral of women and girls to facilities engaged in dangerous or illegal second- and third-trimester procedures;

(2) Congress has the responsibility to-—

• (A) investigate and conduct hearings on-— (i) abortions performed near, at, or after viability in the United States; and (ii) public policies regarding such abortions; and
• (B) evaluate the extent to which such abortions involve violations of the natural right to life of infants who are born alive or are capable of being born alive, and therefore are entitled to equal protection under the law;

(3) there is a compelling governmental interest in protecting the lives of unborn children beginning at least from the stage at which substantial medical evidence indicates that they are capable of feeling pain, which is separate from and independent of the compelling governmental interest in protecting the lives of unborn children beginning at the stage of viability, and neither governmental interest is intended to replace the other; and

(4) governmental review of public policies and outcomes relating to the issues described in paragraphs (1) through (4) is long overdue and is an urgent priority that must be addressed for the sake of women, children, families, and future generations.

The City Choir of Washington D.C. performed in the concert drama Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin the evening of April 29th at Lincoln Center, New York City.  Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp(Terezin) during World War II who performed the famous Verdi Requiem while experiencing the depths of human degradation.  This multi-media performance included testimony from survivors of the original chorus.

Scranton native Linda Cirba is a member of the City Choir of Washington D.C.  and has been singing with the choir since 2010.  Linda Cirba studied music at Shenandoah University's Conservatory  in Winchester, Virginia.  Linda recently performed in the Diamond Jubilee Coronation Anniversary Concert of the City Choir of Washington D.C. on April 21st at Washington National Cathedral.  The concert featured a world premiere performance of three hymns  of George Herbert and Tolstoy's Creed by Sir John Tavener.  Miss Cirba was featured in a solo.   Miss Cirba's parents Susan and Robert Cirba Jr.of Scranton attended the Lincoln Center performance with other family members.

Stem cells can be taken from one person (donor) and given to another person (recipient) through allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Donor stem cells can then replace the recipient's stem cells in the bone marrow, restoring normal blood production and immunity. Most allogeneic transplants now use stem cells collected from the donor's blood in a process called peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.
MonoMAC is an immunodeficiency disease that is characterized by a lack of monocytes, a type of white blood cell, and an increased risk of developing mycobacteria infections that may cause tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND:

Mutations in GATA2 lead to an immunodeficiency disease that transforms intomyelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). This syndrome, previously known as MonoMAC, has 4 clinical features: 1) infections with Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC) and other opportunistic infections as a teenager or young adult, 2) a peripheral blood leukocyte flow cytometry profile with Tlymphocytes, but a severe deficiency of monocytes, B-lymphocytes, and Natural Killer (NK) cells, 3) the propensity to progress to MDS/AML, and 4) mutations in the gene GATA2. In this pilot study we propose to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a reduced intensity allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) regimen for patients with mutations in GATA2. We are particularly interested in determining whether allogeneic HSCT using this regimen reconstitutes normal hematopoiesis in patients with mutations in GATA2.  (Some details omitted here but click on link at beginning of post foooooor  additional details..)

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, PA-11, today endorsed legislation that would prohibit the federal government from levying a tax on employers for exercising their religious and moral beliefs by not complying with federal mandates under Obamacare.  According to a Congressional Research Service report, insurers and employers that do not comply with mandates from Health and Human Services could face a federal tax of $100 per day per employee, or $36,500 a year per employee. 

“We are a nation that was founded on the independence of religious thought,” said Rep. Barletta.  “For the federal government to impose rules that run afoul of this is unconscionable.” 

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, leaves intact an assault to religious freedom, in that it leaves in place the controversial HHS mandate that requires employers to provide drugs and services in their employee health care plans, regardless of religious and moral objections to those services.  The decision also leaves intact one of the largest tax increases on the American public through the individual mandate tax and various other taxes tucked away in dark corners of the law.  

“The most unreported part of Obamacare is that unelected bureaucrats are inflicting their views onto American citizens,” Barletta said.  “Invading religious rights is the worst part of it.  It has to stop.  And it has to stop now.”-30-

Sen. Coburn gives tribute to chief-of-staff Michael Schwartz

Michael Schwartz, a longtime pro-life advocate and chief of staff to Senator Tom Coburn died recently of ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease at age 63.  Michael was a devout Catholic and defender of the family.  He came to speak to Scranton area pro-lifers in 1990 at the annual Respect Life Prayer Breakfast sponsored by Pennsylvanians for Human Life.  Senator Tom Coburn gave a beautiful tribute to Michael Schwartz on the floor of the Senate when Michael's ailment made it impossible for him to continue to work on Capitol Hill.
