Stem Cell Research Legislation Vote Nears- Senators Need to Hear From You

Legislative Action Alert

The U.S. Congress will soon vote on the funding of embryo-killing stem cell research using your tax dollars. The liberal media rarely tells the public that there are successful alternatives to embryo-killing stem cell research. Adult stem cells, often taken from the patient himself, have been used to treat more than seventy diseases.

Stem cells can be taken from umbilical cord blood, and in 2004, researchers found that stem cells can also be taken from amniotic fluid. It is not necessary to kill human embryos in order to find cures or new treatments for diseases. Yet on January 11th, the U. S, House of Representatives passed legislation (H.R. 3) that would mandate the use of federal tax dollars for research requiring the killing of human embryos. The vote was 253 to 174. Only 32 votes are needed to override a presidential veto.

The Senate is expected to take up the bill before the end of February. Please contact Senator Bob Casey and tell him to resist pressures from the biotech industry and the leadership of the Democrats. He needs to hear from you.

The reasons pro-life people oppose embryonic stem cell research were explained by Dr. Jack Willke, a national pro-life leader, who spoke at the Respect Life Prayer Breakfast in Scranton in January. Willke stated,
“In order to understand the debate over embryonic stem cells, we need to understand where we get embryonic stem cells. You take a brand new human on day five of his life, cut him or her open and take from the inside embryonic stem cells. The only way to get embryonic stem cells is to kill a new human life. This is the first reason we oppose embryonic stem cell research. The second reason is they (cells taken from human embryos) don’t work and probably never will. This is due to rejection as foreign tissue. Embryonic stem cells are foreign tissue to the patient. Infection is another reason. The woman who donated the egg may have a disease, which can be transmitted. Embryonic stem cells do not work because we cannot control the growth of the cells. They produce tumors. One patient who received embryonic stem cells died a year later of a brain tumor. An autopsy showed that the stem cells produced hair and bone cells in his brain.”

Please call Senator Bob Casey now and urge him to oppose federal tax funding of research that requires the killing of human embryos. Senator Casey’s Washington Office Phone is (202) 224-6324 or Casey’s Harrisburg Office at (717) 231-7540

Also call Senator Arlen Specter and ask him to reconsider his position of supporting federal funds for this unethical, embryo-killing research. Let him know you don’t want your tax dollars used for embryo-killing stem cell research. Senator Specter’s Washington Office can be reached by calling (202)-224-4254 or his Harrisburg Office at (717) 782-3951
If you are able to write a letter immediately, you may write to the Senators.
Senator Bob Casey - B-40 Dirksen Senate Building, Washington, D.C. 20510
Senator Arlen Specter - 711 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510

Dr. Jack Willke Discusses Stem Cell Research at Pennsylvanians for Human Life Prayer Breakfast

Dr. John Willke, internationally known pro-life leader, author and spokesman was the principal speaker at the twenty-fourth annual Respect Life Prayer Breakfast sponsored by Pennsylvanians for Human Life. Held on Jan 27th at St. Mary’s Center Scranton, the event drew a crowd of nearly 400 people. Clergy who participated in the program included The Most Reverend Joseph F. Martino, Bishop of Scranton, Metropolitan Herman, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, Reverend Christopher Saad, St. Peter’s Cathedral, Reverend Steve Wilson, Hope Church, Moosic and Reverend Paul Howden, Grace Reformed Episcopal Church.

Dr. Willke addressed two issues, what takes place in the earliest days of human life and how this relates to embryonic stem cell research, and the reasons abortion is not safer than childbirth though abortion advocates make that claim .

Dr. Willke stated: " We must know about the first days of life to address the issues of abortion and embryonic stem cell research. We have learned through modern technology that sperm can get into a woman’s ovaries in al little as thirty minutes. If a ripe ovum is present conception can occur. Several million sperm attempt to fertilize the ovum, but only one will push its head through the shell of the ovum. This event creates an electrical charge around the periphery of the ovum preventing any more sperm from getting in."

Willke continued, "The sperm’s penetration is the moment of conception. In 24 hours, sometimes called the process of conception, the genetic material from the mother and father are reconstituted into a single cell. Now we have a complete human body." "When you have a fertilized egg, you have a being which is alive. This being is human, not a rabbit, not celery. This being is sexed, male or female. It is complete. Nothing is added to the single cell you once were except nutrition and oxygen." the doctor emphasized

"This is not a blueprint, because nothing is added. When you build a house you start with a blueprint, but you add bricks, mortar, wood, etc. At conception we have a complete being, either male or female from the first day. All that is needed is time and nutrition so that this new human being can grow. For the first week of life the new individual floats freely and at about one week implants into his mother’s womb and sends a chemical message that there is a passenger here. Don’t menstruate. This new passenger dominates her body until delivery, taking the nutrition he needs and he will even choose his own birthdate." said Willke.

Understanding what happens to every human being in the very first days of his or her life is only part of what we need to know about the debate over embryonic stem cell research. Dr. Willke told his audience, "In order to understand the debate over embryonic stem cells, we need to understand where we get embryonic stem cells. You take a brand new human on day five of his life, cut him or her open and take from the inside embryonic stem cells. The only way to get embryonic stem cells is to kill a new human life." He continued, "This is the first reason we oppose embryonic stem cell research. The second reason is they don’t work and probably never will. This is due to rejection as foreign tissue. Embryonic stem cells are foreign tissue to the patient. Infection is another reason. The woman who donated the egg may have a disease which can be transmitted. Another reason why embryonic stem cells do not work is that we cannot control the growth of the cells. They produce tumors. One patient who received embryonic stem cells died a year later of a brain tumor. An autopsy showed that the stem cells produced hair and bone cells in his brain."
" Adult stem cells are safer and more efficent. Adult stem cells treat over seventy different conditions. For example, an eighteen year old girl who was paralized went to Portugal for treatment. They took stem cells from the lining of her nose and put them into her spinal cord. She is walking. There was no rejection, no infection and they don’t produce tumors." Dr. Willke
reported. His statements about the safety of abortion vs. childbirth will be included in a later post.

Pope Benedict's Christmas Message of concern for children born and unborn:

"VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict ushered in Christmas at midnight Mass, saying the image of the baby Jesus in a manger should remind everyone of the plight of poor, abused and neglected children the world over.

The 79-year-old Benedict celebrated the Mass for more than 10,000 people in St. Peter's Basilica.

Thousands of others watched on large screens outside, and millions more tuned in via television or radio around the world.

Townhall.com::A comedian's sigh, the 4th Commandment, and a better New Year::By Michael Medved

Ben Stiller to his wife: "‘When was the last time I got excited over a Friday night?’ I asked Christine, and she said that maybe it was in high school.’”

From a Jewish point of view, Stiller’s comment conveys a strange sense of emptiness, a tinge of sadness—since our tradition views Friday night – the Sabbath – as by far the most significant, most “exciting” night of the week. Though he often portrays Jewish characters on screen (even playing a likeable, lovesick rabbi in Leap of Faith), Stiller’s mother (the gifted comedienne Anne Meara) is Irish Catholic and he claims no particular affiliation with the religious tradition of either parent. It’s not surprising that he’d feel no particular compunction to celebrate Friday night as a special occasion with his family, but his implication that weekends at home count as boring and indistinguishable highlights the deeper need for Sabbath commitments." to read more of Michael Medved's commentary on the Sabbath observance visit:

A TRIBUTE TO FATHER NOVIELLO

I recently received this tribute from a pro-life leader in the Wyoming Valley. Father Noviello is an example of the many holy priests laboring in the Lord's vineyard. The secular media will never tell their story.

A TRIBUTE TO FATHER NOVIELLO _ Father Anthony Noviello, age 90, died Friday morning, December 15th , 2006, after being stuck by a car during an early morning walk near his Williamsport home. We shall greatly miss you, dear Father Noviello! Father lived an exemplary life as a true Priest of God. He devoted himself for the salvation of those under his care and for all he met. He loved people and worked tirelessly instructing others concerning Church Teachings. He took seriously and preached the heavenly message of the Blessed Virgin of Fatima. One of Father's many legacies was his founding of the annual Rosary Rally in Wyoming Valley. Each year Father would purchase advertising Billboards and would rent the Ica-Rama to accommodate the thousands of pilgrims. Father would literally 'walk the extra miles' in procession through the streets prayerfully, to end abortion. Father Noviello was a master of languages and could superbly explain a particular situation. He would courageously give a most educated discourse on the evil of abortion even in the midst of controversy. Father Noviello was the first true friend of the Pro-Life Center. Many years ago he gave the needed confidence to our President in opening the Center. He was a Priest who practiced what he preached, generously and spontaneously donating to a pro-life project such as sponsoring a whole Bus to the March For Life. Father Noviello was a penitential Priest, one who quietly carried his cross in life. Father Noviello is in the glory of the Father and can now do more for the causes near to his heart. May his reward be great. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Brownback Enters Presidential Race -- GOPUSA

"Ours is an exceptional nation. A nation between two oceans made up of people from every nation on earth. A great nation united by our ideals. But we are a great nation because of our goodness. If we ever lose our goodness, we will surely lose our greatness.

We believe in a culture of life--that every human life is a beautiful, sacred, unique child of a loving God.

We believe in justice for all--at all times.

We believe in liberty.

But the central institutions that best transmit these values--the family and the culture--are under withering attack." TO READ MORE VISIT:

Mike Gallagher writes about the election: "But at the end of the day, I’ll put the prominent Republican leaders up against the Democrats of 2006 any time. And we’ll all be able to agree that there is a world of difference between the two.

Just consider the people who help to make up the heart and soul of the Democratic Party: Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Michael Moore, Keith Olbermann, Alcee Hastings, Marion Berry, Rosie O’Donnell, Barbara Boxer, and Barbra Streisand.

Chris Carney Campaign Contributions.

Chris Carney is running in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District against Don Sherwood, a Congressman who has an 100% pro-life rating according to the National Right to Life PAC.

While Chris Carney’s political ads describe him as a man with "family values", Carney’s Federal Election Commission Report paints a different picture. Carney has taken contributions from a set of Congressmen who share a radical, left wing, pro-abortion set of values.
Loretta Sanchez, a member of the pro-abortion caucus in Congress, gave Carney a $1,000.00 contribution on 9/28/06.

The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) is one of the groups responsible for promoting the legalization of abortion. NARAL still influences legislators today and has made contributions to Allyson Schwartz for Congress, Nancy Pelosi and Doris Matsui in 2005. Allyson Schwartz made a $2,000.00 contribution to Carney on 5/22/06, Nancy Pelosi contributed $2,000.00 to the Carney Campaign on 9/11/06 and Ms. Matsui gave him $1,000.00 on 9/07/06.

The National Organization for Women is another abortion-promoting organization that has endorsed a number of candidates for Congress including Mike Honda, Zoe Lofgren, Lois Capps, Lucille Roybal-Allard and Loretta Sanchez. (Lofgren, Capps, and Roybal-Allard are so radical they voted FOR the cloning of human embryos on Feb. 27, 2003. (NRLC News March 2003)

What do these people have to do with Chris Carney? All these pro-abortion candidates or Congressmen have contributed to Chris Carney’s campaign. Honda gave Carney $500.00 on 8/7/06, while Lofgren gave him $1,000.00 on 9/13/06. Lois Capps gave Chris Carney $1,000.00 on 8/09/06, and Roybal-Allard gave him $1,000.00 on 9/23/06. The Sanchez contribution to the Carney campaign was mentioned earlier.

So why are these radical pro-abortion candidates and Congressmen giving to Chris Carney’s campaign? Because Carney shares their radical, pro-abortion views.

The world is not Topeka, Kansas (would that it were). A journalist pointed out to President Bush at his most recent press conference that the Iraq war has now been going on as long as World War II did for the United States. Well, yes, but we lost 407,316 men in World War II. On Iwo Jima alone, we lost 6,800. This is not to say that the deaths of our people in Iraq should be trivialized. But comparisons with World War II -- in terms of sacrifice and terrible price paid -- are ridiculous." Charen discusses the economy, the judiciary, to immigration.
