In 2005 Rep. Chris Smith introduced the "Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act". The bill was re-authorized today by a voice vote. It provides for the collection and maintenance of stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood. From the bill: "In General- The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall enter into one-time contracts with qualified cord blood banks to assist in the collection and maintenance of 150,000 new units of high-quality cord blood to be made available for transplantation through the C.W.
