The Long Awakening | The Weekly Standard

"The case of Terri Schiavo--who died five years ago next March, deprived for nearly two weeks of food and water, even the balm of ice chips--continues to prick consciences. That may be one reason the case of Rom Houben, a Belgian man who was misdiagnosed for 23 years as being in a persistent vegetative state, is now receiving international attention." Visit:

Health Care Monster Not Dead Yet- Wesley Smith: Obama Care taking the Steak out of the Vampire's Heart

"Earlier this week, Pelosi said she did not have the votes to pass the Senate bill through the House unchanged. And Reid, who lost his 60-vote majority on Tuesday, does not have the votes to make wholesale changes to legislation his chamber passed last month. So, leaders are considering making limited changes that can be passed using a budget process called reconciliation, which only requires 51 votes in the Senate. Visit:Secondhand Smoke

Scott Brown: the tea party’s first electoral victory / The Christian Science Monitor - CSMonitor.com

Don't miss this excellent editorial.
"There is no clearer sign of an impending collapse of power and subsequent political realignment in an open democracy then when leaders of the ruling party resort to vote-buying, payoffs, misrepresentation, and secrecy to pass their legislative agenda and force implementation of their priorities.
If the healthcare reform bill’s $300 billion Louisiana Purchase and $100 billion Nebraska Cornhusker kickback – taxpayer-funded “help” for specific states to secure the votes of two reluctant Democrat senators – were not enough to cause revulsion, then the $60 billion union payoff late last week seems to have been the tipping point for national upheaval." Discovery Institute - Top Ten Bioethics Stories of the Decade - Wesley Smith

Wesley Smith Lists the Top Ten Bioethics Stories of the Decade.
"As we come to the end of the first tenth of the 21st century, pundits are making lists about the decade just past: the biggest stories, the worst movies. In that spirit, here’s a list of the top ten stories in bioethics.
This isn’t an idle exercise. Bioethics matters. The field exerts tremendous influence over the most important questions of public policy and moral values: How should we treat the most vulnerable and dependent among us? What makes us human? Indeed, is it even morally relevant that one is human? Trends in bioethics, thus, illuminate where we are as a society and the nature of the culture we are creating for our progeny."

Robert H. Knight: Coral Ridge Ministries: Rationed Health Care

One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite articles on the health care bill:
"The government competes in the private sector the way an alligator 'competes' with a duck … If you introduce a government-funded option into the private health industry, millions and millions of Americans will lose their current health insurance because their employers will either choose to discontinue coverage or you’ll see health insurance companies out across America say, 'we can’t compete with Uncle Sam.' And so, voluntarily and involuntarily, we’ll see millions of Americans move into a government program." Visit: Robert H. Knight: Coral Ridge Ministries: Rationed Health Care:

National Right to Life Committee Statement on Health Care Federal Legislation

"The U.S. Senate on December 24 passed sweeping legislation to restructure the health care system.
The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) strongly opposes the Senate legislation, which contains multiple provisions under which the federal government could promote both insurance coverage of abortion and rationing of lifesaving medical treatments. The legislation (H.R. 3590), the 'Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,' sponsored by Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.), was approved on a series of party-line votes, with all 60 members of the Senate Democratic caucus (including two independents) voting to advance the legislation, and all Republicans opposing" Visit:

Stimulus Funds Went to Nonexistent Zip Code Areas [Updated]

The most corrupt administration in history?
"First it was phantom Congressional districts. Now it’s phantom zip codes.
Last month, we reported on federal stimulus money credited with creating jobs in nonexistent New Mexico Congressional districts. Further examination of the most recent report on the recipients and uses of New Mexico’s share of the $787 billion stimulus shows jobs created and money going to zip codes that do not exist.
New Mexico Watchdog broke what became a national news story, and fodder for Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert. The website launched by the Obama Administration to track the destinations of billions of dollars of stimulus funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act showed billions going to nonexistent Congressional districts." Every Year's Best New Year's Resolution: Pray to End Abortion: 40 Days for Life Success Stories

"Kalispell, Montana Planned Parenthood abortion center closes
Last spring, a 40 Days for Life prayer vigil was held in front of a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Kalispell, Montana. On November 20, that facility closed. Planned Parenthood admitted it did not have enough customers to keep the doors open. The 40 Days for Life team in Kalispell is convinced – prayer is powerful, and it works! Here's a quick look at the celebration event held outside the former abortion center." See Video: 40 Days for Life: A new 40 Days for Life prayer campaign begins if February, but that doesn't mean you can't start praying now!

This Year's Second Best New Year's Resolution: Campaign Summons Christians to Pray at U.S. Colleges

This year Christians are being asked to pray on college campuses. How did the campaign begin? "Last year across North Dakota 1,700 students gathered in mostly small groups at every college and university that exists, praying that God would awaken the hearts of unbelievers. At Ohio State, a young woman named Allison decided to invite her friends to experience Jesus and the meetings still are going on. In Indiana, the prayers that started with a single student resulted in a salvation experience for members of one fraternity."

Adoption - Find My Family - ABC.com

Donna recently sent information about a TV show called Find My Family on ABC. Here is a description and link to one of the episodes. How might a show like this have an impact on young people's attitudes toward adoption?
Description: "Find My Family heads to Crestview, Florida to meet Denise Bashaw, a 27-year-old mother trying to keep up with two adorable children while her husband serves overseas in the Air Force. Denise always knew she was adopted and could not have asked for better parents. But ten years ago...her adoptive mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, passing away less than a year later. At 16 Denise... (decided to) find her birth mother. Denise started her search, but "has come up empty." You can watch as Find My Family takes up the search.
